TELLING THE STORY OF AGRICULTURE

 ON THE NATIONAL MALL

Farm Journal Foundation is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to manage the outdoor learning space at USDA's headquarters on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Located steps from the Smithsonian Metro stop on "America's front yard," the Voice of the Farmer Garden exhibit includes all the major crops grown in America, a mobile phone walking tour, and signs teaching visitors about agriculture's important contributions to our nation's economy, food security, nutrition, culture, and more.

The garden is open to the general public all year round. To plan a group tour or classroom visit, please get in touch. Agriculture has such a vital story to share, we hope you can join us!

Learning in the Garden

The garden offers multiple platforms for learning, including individual walking tours, guided group visits, and virtual classroom content.

A Living Exhibit

The garden features over 30 different crops, representing the diversity of American agriculture. Depending on the time of year, visitors can see row crops like corn and soybeans, specialty crops like tomatoes and peppers, orchard crops like apples and figs, and feed crops like sorghum and alfalfa, in addition to pollinator plants, cover crops, and evergreen trees.

Visitors may enjoy returning to the space in different seasons to watch the garden change throughout the year.

Farmers Tell the Story

Farmers tell the story of agriculture in their own voices through the garden's mobile phone walking tour.

Signs in the garden include QR codes that visitors can scan to watch videos narrated by farmers, ranchers, and growers from across the United States. Videos cover a wide range of topics, tracing the journey of food from farm to table.

Hands-On Education

The garden is open to the public all year long. The space also regularly hosts industry group visits and classroom tours.

Whether it's a hands-on learning day harvesting crops with our master gardener, or a guided visit focusing on specific topics within agriculture, the garden is an ideal space for educational activities about food and agriculture.

Garden Podcast

Farm Journal Foundation recently launched a new podcast, Agriculture Crunch, to support education beyond the garden. The podcast features stories and interviews, often with our garden partners, in quick, bite-sized episodes.

The podcast is produced in partnership with Farm Journal Media and is available through Farm Journal TV, Youtube, and major podcast platforms.

Become a Garden Partner

Farm Journal Foundation collaborates with partners from across the food and agricultural community. Garden partners have the opportunity shape the garden's story with us and to inform featured content on individual crops and issue areas.  To learn more about how to become a garden partner, contact fjf@farmjournalfoundation.org.
